WHY COLLECT AUCTION CATALOGS?
Auction catalogs are valuable - and affordable - reference tools for collectors. They give us the expertise of the world's leading specialists; they show us hundreds of items, often with spectacular photos; they can give a general overview or a very detailed look at different areas of collecting (and sometimes of collectors as well). Most catalogs have estimates of what the item was expected to bring at auction printed along with the item description; many of them also have the final sale results. For those areas of collecting which aren't too well-documented, or where the reference books can cost almost as much as one of the items being collected, auction catalogs are especially valuable; for any area of collecting, well-documented or not, they're always helpful identification aids.

Christie’s 40 Years of Star Trek Auction<>
On October 5 - 7, 2006, as part of the 40th anniversary of Star Trek celebration, Christie's auction house offered 1000 premium lots of screen used memorabilia featuring props, costumes, set pieces and models encompassing all 5 Star Trek television series and the 10 major motion pictures that had been produced to date. This historic sale marked the first time that CBS Paramount released part of its vast inventory of Star Trek production material at an officially sanctioned public offering; and this extraordinary 3 day event at Christie's Rockefeller Center branch in New York City realized more than double the pre-sale expectations with a total revenue of $7,107,040. The starship filming models were amongst the most expensive lots; with nine selling for more than $100,000 each, and the 78 inch long Enterprise-D model used extensively in Star Trek: The Next Generation realized an incredible $576,000 to become the single, most-expensive piece of Star Trek memorabilia ever sold at auction. Other notable sales highlights included a TOS Dr. McCoy space suit from the episode "The Tholian Web" (original airdate Nov. 15, 1968) which realized $144,000; and a non-working Ressikan flute used by Jean-Luc Picard in the TNG episode "The Inner Light" which sold for $48,000. The entire auction was streamed live on The History Channel website; and Christie's indicated that the sale attracted bidder participation from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia - which is a testament to the worldwide appeal of Star Trek. Below are some photos taken at the public viewings that preceded the event. The last photo shows the auction room itself during this historic sale ...
